The Cathedral community is saddened by the sudden passing of a former faculty member and longtime supporter. Mr. Victor Balzano passed away peacefully but suddenly at his home with his wife in Las Vegas this past weekend.
Mr. Balzano began his career at Cathedral High School In the fall of 1954. A dearly beloved faculty member, Mr. Balzano and his wife Diane dedicated 33 years to Cathedral. He served as a teacher, coach, athletic director and friend. Mr. Balzano retired from Cathedral in the fall of 1987 and his impact is still present on the campus. His legacy remains at Cathedral as having the sport’s field, the “Balzano Family Field,” on campus named in his honor and being recognized through the Alumni association with the “Victor Balzano Spirit Award.” In 2015 he was our guest of honor at our Annual Scholarship Banquet.
A graduate of Franklin High School in 1946, Mr. Balzano continued his studies at Glendale College and eventually graduated from St. Mary’s College, Moraga. He then went on to serve with the United States Army for two years during the Korean War. Upon his return from his military service Mr. Balzano was recommended for the opening at Cathedral High School. Mr. Balzano’s lectures were always brought to life with his personal experience and enthusiasm to teach. During his tenure at Cathedral, Mr. Balzano lost his sight but continued teaching with the support of his dedicated wife. Many Alumni remember his classes and influence fondly, some serving as teacher’s aid. On his departure from Cathedral he wanted every student to know that they should “always be proud to be Phantoms. We are not taking a back seat to anybody.”
