President's Message

Dear Friends,
Welcome to Cathedral High School Website!

As we approach a remarkable milestone in our history, I am filled with a profound sense of pride and gratitude. This year, Cathedral High School celebrates its 100th anniversary—a century of academic excellence, spiritual growth, and unwavering commitment to our Lasallian values and our students.  As a 1986 graduate and a parent of two sons that graduated in 2010, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of our education.  I am honored to serve as your President during this historic occasion.

Throughout the past century, Cathedral High School has stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity for young men in the heart of our city. Our mission has always been to provide a quality Catholic education that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. We have seen countless alumni go on to achieve great success, guided by the Lasallian principles instilled in them during their time here.

Cathedral High School remains committed to its mission.  We currently serve 600 young men under the dedicated leadership of the Lasallian Christian Brothers.

We have improved the campus in the last 25 years with over $45,000,000 of new construction and technology upgrades.  We built a new gymnasium/science building in 2008 and football/soccer field/track in 2009. We completed the new Richard A Grant Theater and The De LaSalle Visual and Performing Arts building in 2019. We replaced the field/track and renovated the oldest building on campus this summer with a new $3,000,000 upgrade.  Most recently we renovated our Senior Building classrooms, including a fully remodeled Cafeteria and Counseling Offices.  These new facilities give our students the opportunity to have a state-of-the-art campus with a quality faculty.

Cathedral has for the last 100th years served families primarily from the oldest neighborhoods of Los Angeles and from the surrounding Greater Los Angeles area.  Our Math and Science Academy was created 11 years ago to offer our students interested in majoring in STEM a quality training program for their future. This program is for our top academic students to prepare them for some of the most rigorous universities in the country. We have had multiple graduates admitted to MIT, John Hopkins University, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Harvey Mudd and other top STEM Universities in the country since its inception.

We are proud of the fact that many of our families receive scholarship assistance to afford the cost of a quality education. This year we sent over 90% of our graduating class to four-year universities and colleges.  This success comes at a time when
college enrollment of young men, is on the decline.

Cathedral also offers a quality athletic program including the recent addition of our Esports teams. We have won various CIF Southern Section and state championships over the past 12 years. We offer many clubs and student activities for our students’ enjoyment and growth.

As we celebrate a momentous 100th anniversary, let us remember the countless lives that have been touched by Cathedral High School since 1925.  Let us honor the legacy of those who came before us and we are committed to ensuring that future generations have the same opportunities to excel.   We begin our Centennial Celebration with our Centennial Kickoff football Game against Loyola on August 23, 2023.  Please inquire within to attend any of our Centennial Celebrations.

Thank you for taking the time to find out more about Cathedral.  We hope you will consider joining our Cathedral family or join us for any of our Centennial celebrations.

Sincerely,

Martin Farfan ‘86
