MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

PHILOSOPHY

1. The philosophy of the department of Mathematics carries out the same principles found in the school’s philosophy of education. Teachers strive to develop responsible young adults who can think logically and critically. Realizing the importance and practicality of mathematics in daily living, the students, through practice, achieves mastery of computational skills. The student develops the power to perceive and express relationship. The habit of using deductive and inductive reasoning is encouraged not only in the area of mathematics but also in dailylife situations. Mathematics, therefore, contributes to the education of the entire student.

2. The Mathematics Department of Cathedral High School offers a curriculum in which mathematics skills and concepts are attained and students are challenged to develop the intellectual foundation necessary to continue the education. We offer a four year plan for all students.

3. The department believes that the concepts and skills of mathematics are best acquired by the engagement of the students in doing mathematics through college. We encourage all students to proceed along this sequence as far as they can; so they can prepare themselves to pursue one of the many avenues of further academic development, which will then be open to them in college.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The following goals and objectives reflect the skills we hope to develop in all students in Cathedral:

1. To develop students’ appreciation for organization and neatness.

a. Students keep notes that demonstrate an understanding of the daily lecture in an orderly fashion.

b. To meet our philosophy, homework is mandatory and assigned regularly.

c. Students are taught to demonstrate problems in an organized and clear manner both in homework and test.

2. To assist students in appropriate problem solving.

a. Students are taught to analyze, formulate, apply and demonstrate correct solutions.

b. Students will acquire skills in basic computation, inductive and deductive reasoning.

c. Teachers develop and implement diverse strategy in presenting concepts.

3. To empower students to use technology to solve problems.
